The Korg i30 Music Workstation is a versatile high quality synthesizer with a graphical touch sensitive screen for setting up backings, choosing styles and sounds, setting up performances (see below), loading and saving data on disk, setting up MIDI parameters etc.
Performances are a combination of right hand primary keyboard, right hand sub keyboard and left hand voices combined with various settings such as their relative volume, keyboard split position etc.
The Korg I30 Interactive Music Workstation can be used in many ways...
It can simply be played live using a range of built-in sounds and/or sounds that the user creates.
It also has a large selection of built-in accompaniments that can be played fully fingered or just using one or two fingers, and mix and match is possible (sometimes fingering the chord, sometimes using just one finger, without having to switch modes - the i30 figures it out). Each accompaniment has 4 variations, 2 fill-ins, intro and ending sequences. The user can also create their own custom accompaniments that will then be stored in memory.
It has a multi-track sequencer which can be programmed to play orchestral or band parts with or without the user playing along. The sequence can be pre-loaded with a MIDI file and then worked on further to perfect intonation, choice of instrumentation, etc. Often the best way to do this is to use a software tool like Band-in-a-Box running on a PC and generate a fairly sophisticated backing exporting it as a MIDI file, copy it onto floppy disk, then read it into the Korg i30 for further and final processing. The i30 also has a built-in sequencer-recorder to record individual tracks or complete performances, and it has MIDI IN/OUT/THRU sockets too.
User-created information (such as sounds, automated backings, sequence programming) can be accommodated into the internal memory of the I30 and/or on disk; it uses 3.5in 2HD floppy disks. The i30 also can be fitted with an optional internal hard drive. Foot pedals can be attached and used for volume and for other functions - the switched pedals can be programmed as to what they do. There are also two switches on the panel which are also user-programmable.
